Both usually trace back to humidity control or an expansion gap that was too tight from the start.
Acclimation Is Not Optional Here
Flooring needs to adjust to the home it will live in before it goes down. That means letting the boxes sit, unopened or loosely stacked, inside the actual room for several days so the material reaches the home's normal temperature and humidity. Skipping this step is one of the most common causes of seasonal failure in Chicago installs, because the planks settle into their new size after they are already locked together.
Subfloor moisture matters just as much, especially over a concrete slab in a basement or garden unit. Concrete holds water long after it looks dry, and without a proper moisture barrier that vapor migrates straight into the flooring above. A quick moisture reading before installation is cheap insurance against a floor that cups or swells months later.
Keeping the Indoor Climate in Range
The single most effective protection is steady indoor humidity, ideally held somewhere in the comfortable middle range year round. A humidifier tied to your furnace in winter and air conditioning or a dehumidifier in summer keeps the planks from making big seasonal moves in the first place. Floors that live in a stable home simply do not peak or gap the way neglected ones do.
